Four evenings a week for six weeks Al and I worked steadily on the book cutting no corners, pushing ourselves hard and actually enjoying it. Al took extraordinary pains over the routines, chucking out four that had been on the shortlist - two of them that had even been written up - because in his view they didn't match the impact or audience appeal of other material already in the manuscript. I found myself rejecting a whole set of photographs because they had a different background tone from others already printed. Nit-picking, ruthless weeding, the production of endless drafts until descriptions were as clear as they could be - such behaviour was standard for the project. And we were having a good time!"
